Fantagraphics’ No Straight Lines: Four Decades of Queer Comics Panel, Room #25ABC
Queer cartooning has been one of the most vibrant artistic and countercultural movements of the past 40 years, tackling complex issues of identity and changing social mores with intelligence, humor, and an irreverent imagination. No Straight Lines, a massive anthology published by Fantagraphics Books, is the most definitive collection to date of this material, showcasing the spectrum from lesbian underground comix, to gay newspaper strips, to bi punk zines, to trans webcomics. Join the editor of the book, Justin Hall (Glamazonia, Hard To Swallow) as he moderates an all-star panel of some of the true greats of LGBTQ comics: Alison Bechdel (Fun Home,Dykes To Watch Out For), Paige Braddock (Jane’s World), Ed Luce (Wuvable Oaf), Trina Robbins (Wimmen’s Comix) and Eric Shanower (Age of Bronze).

Artists’ Reception for “Do Anything” exhibition
Space 4 Art, 325 15th Street, Downtown San Diego
The show features work by individual artists and collectives who focus on do-it-yourself publishing and print projects. Employing alternative methods of production and distribution to create books, zines, and video work, the exhibiting artists work with a variety of themes to actively engage a wide audience. Opening during Comic-Con, this exhibition focuses on artistic practices that push the boundaries of contemporary publishing. The opening reception will feature a screening of Strange Attractors: Investigations in Non-Humanoid Extraterrestrial Sexualities on Space 4 Art’s outdoor stage.
Artists and collectives exhibiting include: Bettie Breitweiser, The Institute of Extraterrestrial Sexuality and Encyclopedia Destructica, Juliacks, Justseeds, Darin Klein, Ed Luce, Ed Piskor, Louis M. Schmidt, Tom Scioli, Mary Tremonte, and Unicorn Mountain. As a satellite to the exhibition, Double Break Gallery (located at 1821 5th Avenue in Bankers Hill) will be showing new zines by Josh Atlas, Jessica Greenfield, Ben Hernstrom, Jennifer Murray, and Jessica Vaughn.

Gays in Comics: 25th Year Celebration! Room #6A
The comic world’s longest-running panel celebrates its silver anniversary with an incredible all-star panel and celebration which will spotlight creators, comics, and fans from 1988 to the present. This year, founding moderator and best-selling author Andy Mangels, will chair a new form of panel, a live documentary that will unfold for the audience, featuring a mixture of commentary, images, music and other surprises! Showcased with live appearances and video messages will be an army of awesome creators who have appeared on the previous 24 panels, including: Howard Cruse, Roberta Gregory, Phil Jimenez, Alison Bechdel, Charles “Zan” Christensen, Gail Simone, Eric Shanower, Joan Hilty, Ivan Velez, Jr., Paige Braddock, Joe Phillips, Trina Robbins, Dan Parent, Wendy Pini, Chip Kidd, Patty Jeres, Joe Palmer, Ed Luce, Jeff Krell, Robert Triptow, Justin Hall, Marc Andreyko, Sean-Z, Steve Englehart, Jon Macy, Ted Abenheim and Roger Klorese. This panel will be chock-full from beginning to end, so be on time or you’ll miss some awesome surprises that we aren’t announcing yet! Afterward, stick around for the celebratory gay comics fan mixer/social, hosted by PRISM Comics, with prizes and surprise special guests!
